Abstract
A general model has been developed to guide educators through the use of technological teaching tools. This general model is known asASSURE (Analyse learners, State objectives, Select media and materials, Utilise media/materials, Require participation and Evaluate and revise). For the purposes of this research, the researcher examines the use of theASSURE model as a methodological framework for the implementation and reflection of CAI with first-year dental hygiene students. The researcherAnalysed the students' background using a questionnaire (level of education, previous experience in the field of dentistry, previous experience and level of confidence using computers). The researcher Stated general teaching and learning objectives, and Selected media and materials. Since the researcher experienced difficulty finding any suitable software, a survey was mailed to all of the Dental Hygiene Schools across Canada in order to share information on finding as well as using CAI. During the final stages ofASSURE, the researcher Required participation by the students and Evaluated the entire process. Following the CAI experience, the students were surveyed, via discussion groups and by a questionnaire, regarding their opinions and experiences with the learning tool. Results of these surveys and discussion groups were used to Evaluate and revise the process. (Résumé abrégé par UMI.)
