Les polaritons de Tamm dans les multicouches en silicium poreux

Abstract

Nous démontrons que les multicouches en Si poreux présentent plusieurs avantages pour réaliser des polaritons de Tamm en vue d'applications technologiques. Cette approche nous permet entre autres d'observer pour la première fois des polaritons de Tamm découlant d'un couplage avec des phonons optiques dans l'infrarouge moyen. Le concept de polariton décrit un mode optique hybride résultant du couplage d'une onde électromagnétique avec un milieu résonant, par exemple les charges libres d'un métal dans le cas des plasmon-polaritons et les phonons optiques d'un diélectrique polaire dans le cas des phonon-polaritons. Les polaritons de Tamm sont quant à eux des modes localisés à l'interface entre un cristal photonique unidimensionnel et un métal ou un diélectrique polaire. Leur présence se manifeste expérimentalement par un creux dans le spectre de réflectance à une fréquence donnée à l'intérieur de la bande interdite du cristal photonique. Contrairement aux polaritons de surface, les polaritons de Tamm peuvent être excités à n'importe quel angle d'incidence pour les polarisations TE et TM sans avoir recours à un prisme de couplage ou un réseau de diffraction. De plus, la vaste gamme de matériaux dans lesquels on retrouve ces modes optiques permet de couvrir une large plage du spectre électromagnétique, du visible à l'infrarouge. La région de l'infrarouge moyen est d'une importance particulière étant donné que les composés chimiques y possèdent des signatures optiques uniques. Ces caractéristiques font des polaritons de Tamm une alternative prometteuse à la résonance de plasmons de surface dans plusieurs applications technologiques comme la détection de composés chimiques, l'imagerie thermique multispectrale et l'émission cohérente de radiation thermique. Cependant, l'utilisation des polaritons de Tamm dans un capteur chimique nécessite un matériau poreux et optiquement transparent dans la plage de longueurs d'onde visée. L'approche proposée dans cette thèse pour résoudre ce problème repose sur la fabrication du cristal photonique à l'aide de Si poreux, un matériau composé d'une matrice de Si cristallin dans laquelle des pores nanométriques sont creusés électrochimiquement. La présence de pores permet à un analyte de diffuser à travers le cristal photonique pour atteindre l'interface où le champ électrique des polaritons de Tamm est maximal. De plus, la haute porosité augmente drastiquement la surface de contact disponible à la capture d'analyte. Nous procédons à la démonstration théorique et expérimentale de l'existence de polaritons de Tamm dans un cristal photonique en Si poreux couvert d'un film mince d'or, puis nous présentons des mesures de sensibilité et facteur de qualité de capteurs à base des polaritons de Tamm composés de cristaux photoniques en Si poreux sur substrat de verre couvert d'or. Finalement, nous démontrons l'existence de polaritons de Tamm à base de phonons optiques en mesurant la réflectance infrarouge d'un cristal photonique en Si poreux déposé sur un substrat en SiC. Le Si poreux permet cette observation étant donné que ce matériau est transparent dans l'infrarouge moyen aux longueurs où les phonons optiques sont excités, contrairement à plusieurs autres matériaux utilisés en microfabrication.

Abstract : We demonstrate that porous Si multilayers have several advantages for producing Tamm polaritons for technological applications. This approach allows us, among other things, to observe for the first time Tamm polaritons resulting from a coupling with optical phonons in the mid-infrared. The concept of polariton describes a hybrid optical mode resulting from the coupling of an electromagnetic wave with a resonant medium, for example the free charges of a metal in the case of plasmon-polaritons and the optical phonons of a polar dielectric in the case of phonon-polaritons. Tamm polaritons, on the other hand, are localized modes at the interface between a one-dimensional photonic crystal and a metal or a polar dielectric. Their presence manifests itself experimentally as a dip in the reflectance spectrum at a given frequency within the forbidden band of the photonic crystal. Unlike surface polaritons, Tamm polaritons can be excited at any angle of incidence for TE and TM polarizations without resorting to a coupling prism or diffraction grating. In addition, the wide range of materials in which these optical modes are found make it possible to cover a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum, from visible to infrared light. Of particular importance is the mid-infrared region, as chemical compounds have unique optical signatures there. These characteristics make Tamm polaritons a promising alternative to surface plasmon resonance in several technological applications such as the detection of chemical compounds, multispectral thermal imaging and the coherent emission of thermal radiation. However, the use of Tamm polaritons in a chemical sensor requires a porous and optically transparent material in the desired wavelength range. The approach proposed in this thesis to solve this problem is based on the fabrication of the photonic crystal using porous Si, a material composed of a crystalline Si matrix in which nanometric pores are electrochemically hollowed out. The presence of pores allows an analyte to diffuse through the photonic crystal to reach the interface where the electric field of Tamm polaritons is maximum. In addition, the high porosity drastically increases the contact surface available for analyte capture. We proceed to the theoretical and experimental demonstration of the existence of Tamm polaritons in a porous Si photonic crystal covered with a thin film of gold, then we present measurements of sensitivity and quality factor of Tamm polaritons sensors made of porous Si photonic crystals on a glass substrate covered with gold. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of Tamm polaritons based on optical phonons by measuring the infrared reflectance of a porous Si photonic crystal deposited on a SiC substrate. Porous Si allows this observation given that this material is transparent in the mid-infrared at wavelengths where optical phonons are excited, unlike several other materials used in microfabrication.
