The image of the cage in Gabrielle Roy and Margaret Laurence
The examination of the cage imagery in Gabrielle Roy and Margaret Laurence brings one to the conclusion that there are four major cages: the first, one could call the cage of logic; it is the cage which encloses the emotions. The second type of cage could be called the economic cage; the poor are trapped inside their poverty by their lack of money. The third cage is multiple in that it is comprised of all physical cages by which the body is surrounded. The fourth cage is the creative cage; it is the description of the artist's isolation which is needed for creation.
