The aim of the present study is to examine the extent of influence that the Christian faith has exercised on Lasnier's and Avison's poetry, and to determine what implication this may have on an understanding of their work. The study begins with a survey of Lasnier's and Avison's poetic development up to the beginning of the 1980's. This is followed by a detailed analysis of three representative poems and the way in which biblical allusions are used as an expression of the Christian faith in these poems. The last part of the study consist of a general discussion of the Christian influence on the poets' work. Possible reasons for the similarities and differences in the poets' expression of the Christian faith are examined and special attention is given to the relationship between Lasnier's and Avison's faith and their work. Of particular interest is the discussion of differences between the "interior" and "exterior" influences of the Christian faith. The "interior" influences are those seen as emanating from Lasnier's and Avison's personal relationship with God. The "exterior" influences are those seen as coming primarily from the personal, confessional and cultural traditions of the two poets.
