Las lenguas sudamericanas en la perspectiva de viajeros ingleses del siglo XIX: los casos de Miers, Caldcleugh y Head

Abstract

Resumen : En este trabajo proponemos el estudio, desde un enfoque glotopolítico, de las representaciones y actitudes lingüísticas en una serie de escritos de tres viajeros ingleses que integraron la “vanguardia capitalista” de la primera mitad del siglo XIX en sus recorridos por América del Sur: John Miers, Alexander Caldcleugh y Francis Bond Head. A partir del análisis comparativo de las representaciones sociolingüísticas y las ideologías lingüísticas que las sostienen, entendemos que sus concepciones acerca de la diferencia lingüística sudamericana contribuyeron a naturalizar el proyecto de expansionismo económico sobre dicho territorio.

Abstract : In this paper we study, from a glottopolical perspective, the linguistic representations and attitudes in three writings of English travellers around South America who were part of the “capitalist vanguard” in the first half of the XIXth century: John Miers, Alexander Caldcleugh and Francis Bond Head. Based on a comparative analysis of the reflexions around the language and the sociolinguistic representations that hold them, we claim that their ideas about the South-American linguistic difference were useful to legimate the european expansionism over that territory.
